This has been one of my coolest things I have done with Southern Utah Hiking, that is my Sweat For Clean Water event I did a little over a year ago.
During that event we raised a couple hundred dollars that went to a project that has helped install a water system in a rural community in Africa that has allowed them to gain access to clean drinking water.
The project was just completed and now more than 150 people have access to clean water.
Why is this important?
As a student I took classes about diseases that effect the world along with an invertebrate zoology class. During these classes we learn about various diseases that are caused by protists (small single celled organisms that are responsible for many diseases, malaria being one of the most famous) and various phylum’s of worms.
Many of these diseases are found in water systems, and just touching the water is a gateway for the parasites to drill their way through your skin and into your body. Imagine how many more can get in if one were to ingest them.
So you see 150 people may be small, but those are lives now saved.
Thanks to all those who contributed to the fund.
I am thinking about doing another event. Stay tuned, and let me know if you would be interested in sponsoring/ donating to the cause.
